Brides often spend a lot of time envisioning how they will look on their wedding day – their dress, shoes, makeup, and jewelry. But, most importantly, they think about that one perfect hairstyle that will pull the entire look together. One of my favorite jobs throughout my career as a hairstylist has been creating personalized, beautiful styles for brides and their wedding party.
Yet, I often find that a bride has put so much thought into finding her own perfect style, she has completely overlooked that fact that she needs to plan hairstyles for her bridesmaids too – ones that fit in with the overall vision and theme for her special day without overshadowing her own unique style.
In order to make sure your trip to the salon goes smoothly on your wedding day, there are a few simple steps you can follow to make sure you and your bridesmaids all come out looking your best!
Your wedding day is going to be busy! The last thing you want to do is spend way too much time in a salon trying to figure out how each of your bridesmaid’s hair is going to be styled. If you have a well laid out plan, you will have a fun experience that is not time consuming, and your bridesmaids will come out of the salon looking great and, most importantly, ready to focus their attention on you!
You should talk to your stylist well in advance of your wedding day. I like to meet the bride and, if possible, her bridesmaids before the day of the wedding to come up with a game plan. As often is the case, when you get a group of women together, they often have very different ideas about how they want their hair to be styled. When you sit down and talk about it beforehand, it is easy to find the style that works best for everyone.
You should consider factors such as whether she has short or long hair, the shape of her face, and the cut of her dress. It is not so important that your bridesmaids’ hairstyles match as it is for them to look their best and be comfortable with their style.
I always recommend natural looking makeup and hair for bridesmaids. It creates a classic, elegant look that will make your bridesmaids look natural and beautiful in your wedding photos.
It is important to think about what you and your bridesmaids have to do before you walk into the salon on your big day. You should find out if any of your bridesmaids need a cut or color before the wedding day and have them schedule an appointment about a week ahead of time. Make sure there are no last-minute surprises!
It is also important to schedule any facials, waxing, or other appointments before you come in for your hairstyles.
Is the wedding outdoors where it might be windy? It’s probably not a good idea to spend hours creating beautiful up-dos for your bridesmaids’ if they are going to get blown around the second they walk outside.
It’s important to make sure your bridesmaids’ hairstyles are practical for the event and stay put all day.
Think about the theme of your wedding when choosing hairstyles for your bridesmaids. You can plan unique hairstyles in advance by collecting accessories that go with your wedding theme. You could bring flowers that match the bridesmaids ‘bouquets or barrettes that match their jewelry.
Letting your bridesmaids pick hairstyles that are flattering and comfortable is great, but this is your day and all the attention should be on you! Keeping your bridesmaids’ hairstyles simple will create an elegant look that will look natural in photographs, and also give them more time to cater to you.
Following these simple steps will help you make sure your bridesmaids have the perfect look for your wedding and a hassle-free salon experience. You can even make a party of it! Get your bridesmaids together and flip through some bridal magazines to help find the hairstyles that everyone will be happy with on your big day.

I work with hair and makeup pros from the production industry. So if I am involved in a wedding to the extent that I can contribute to the quality of the bridal party’s experience, I wouldn’t mind helping to provide some suggestions. Quite often, you can get some great ideas from fashion or bridal magazines. Listening to your local hair dresser can be a great idea, too.

How much does it cost to schedule a make over day for the entire wedding party at a professional salon? I was in getting my hair cut once and you can see that they have a table set up with refreshments and everything and the girls are there all day long. I would like to know what is a reasonable price for something like this because I would like to do it for my wedding.

Hi Michelle,
That number will vary greatly based on the area and type of salon you choose. I think it is a great idea and I would suggest you call a couple salons in your area to see what the average price is. They will probably want to know what services you want and how many people will be with you.

You are absolutely right most women do not even think about hair styles for their bridesmaids because they figure that they will figure it out all on their own. I have noticed that more and more wedding parties are scheduling complete days at the hair salons to get their hair done, their nails done and sometimes even their toes.

Janet,
I think it all depends on the bride. Many brides will opt to have a say in what the bridesmaids hairstyle will look like. I know I personally will
